Make yourself more marketable: Build your personal brand
Conan Gallaty, the new online chief for the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, is guest speaking in my mass media writing class Thursday at 1 p.m. We've been talking about Web journalism this week, and his experiences and perspectives will complement our discussion nicely.
I've been pushing new media on my students a lot. We all know traditional media are in trouble, and the more our students establish their personal brands online, the more marketable they will be in the rapidly changing world of mass media.
Specifically, I've encouraged them to:
1. Build an audience - Start a blog that caters to a specific interest. Advertise it. And then write frequently.
2. Buy a domain name. You can get one for about $10. Owning your own domain name is good exposure. I'm about to follow my own advice...
3. Get their profiles out in as many forms as possible. Linkedin, Twitter, blogs, Facebook, personal Web pages. The more places you present your skill sets and profile, the more likely someone is to take notice.
That's all free, folks. Have a great day.

Relief efforts and looking young
I went this weekend with about 30 students to Springdale, Ark., to help with relief efforts after an ice storm toppled trees throughout the northern part of the state. We worked with members of the Robinson Avenue Church of Christ.
The damage was worse than I had expected. Imagine what a tornado does to the trees in its path. Now imagine every tree in your city looking like that. That's what we saw. Most houses had six-foot-high stacks of limbs and logs piled at curbside. It looked like every home was fortified against attack.
Interestingly, everyone at the church thought I was a student. They'd ask me about my major or when I was graduating. I guess I really do look that young.
